TSOLife Employee Spotlight- Samantha Minasola

At TSOLife, we are proud of the hard-working individuals that emulate our core values and principles that create the company culture. We feel honored to be able to recognize the employees that continue to shape the culture and make us the exciting place we love to work each day. This month we want to spotlight Samantha Minasola, an individual whose efforts help propel us forward on our path to being the first company in the senior living industry to use AI to drive innovation, create business intelligence, and streamline resident engagement.

Samantha oversees the Production Department, where we turn resident information into usable data points that the communities can use to optimize engagement. This amazing process uses AI to data-mine up to 6 times more critical and personal information than the average paper-based senior living resident profile. In addition, Samantha and her team facilitate the development of these data points into actionable insights accessible from our BI platform. This ensures that our clients and their communities receive the most significant positive impact in daily operations and, most importantly, resident quality of life.

Before coming to TSOLife, she earned her bachelor’s in psychology and worked as a Behavioral Therapist, using patient insights to drive meaningful change in their lives. When you meet her and hear her speak about her team, that warmth and care are evident.

When asked what she enjoys most about working at TSOLife, she said that playing a role in enhancing residents’ well-being and overall quality of life was so rewarding. Also, she loves working for a company that helps improve seniors’ mental health, “it’s important to me to do something that positively impacts the world, and I am grateful to have a job where we focus on people’s wellness.”

To maintain her wellness, Samantha enjoys being active physically and mentally. She loves going for hikes, singing unique karaoke covers, cooking, and reading. While lovely and caring, one of her guilty pleasures is beating everyone at board games. We’re just thankful that her competitive spirit is used to our benefit.

Samantha’s tireless efforts, attention to detail, and warm heart make her a true asset to our team and the senior living industry. We thank Samantha for her contributions to TSOLife and celebrate her dedication to improving the communities she supports.

Revolutionizing Senior Living: The TSOLife Experience

Revolutionize your resident experience with TSOLife and step into the digital age.

Video Transcript for TSOLife Solutions Video

00:01 – TSOLife is a first-of-its-kind resident insight platform setting the standard for how to gain insight into who is in your community.

00:08 – TSOLife helps senior living communities bring their paper resident profiles into a digital world. To get started, an associate conducts an interview with a resident that is captured with the TSOLife mobile app; not only is it a friendly one-to-one conversation and enjoyable experience, but the audio interview is a streamlined and more effective data capture process.

00:34 – TSOLife interviews, on average, capture over 100 data points in just a 30-minute conversation. This process replaces the traditional paper resident profile and is over 550% more effective for capturing resident data than paper forms. This new data is used to better personalize resident experiences and inform friend-matching algorithms.

00:59 – The audio from the interview is automatically transcribed and creates a digital resonant profile eliminating the need for associates to perform any manual data entry. Now your resident data is digitized and searchable.

01:14 – These resident profiles are also used to create resident friend matches, helping your residents make friends instantly; resident data is then aggregated to create powerful business intelligence dashboards where community and corporate leaders can see all of their residents’ information in one place. From favorite games to religions to veteran status to technology usage, these dashboards hold a wealth of information. These dashboards also provide powerful marketing insights, such as why did your residents choose your community and what triggered them to move in.

01:51 – All information is easily searchable using TSOLife’s search functionality. You may have a resident looking to start a new club with similar-minded residents bringing friends with unique interests together. You may have a prospect with a unique favorite hobby. Search to find the perfect resident to introduce them to.

02:13 – Included in the TSOLife resident interview questionnaire is a research-backed quality-of-life assessment. The positive quality of life scores are associated with lower levels of depression, reduced social isolation, and overall increases in longevity. TSOLife system automatically recognizes residents with low quality of life and recommends tailored and unique opportunities to Engagement Leaders to improve quality of life scores. These opportunities are displayed directly on the engagement worksheet to help engagement teams better allocate their time.

02:50 – Actionable Insights are AI-generated text-based prompts that are delivered directly to associates and provide unique insights to create personal one-on-one conversations with residents.

03:03 – TSOLife revolutionizes your resident experience now that we have stepped into the digital age. This is just the beginning of the impact and innovation we will create.

Innovative Ideas for Life Enrichment Programming

Innovation and technology seem like the “it couple” of the day, highly dependent on one another. However, by definition, innovation is simply the idea of doing something new. We grossly limit ourselves and our organizations when we use the word innovation from a strict technology perspective. However, if we focus on positive disruptive change and get ourselves out of what’s comfortable, we will reap the benefits of long-term innovation.

Innovation is evident when we implement new processes and strategies in everyday business practices. Innovation can also be rooted in science and research. What have we learned from studies that keep us abreast of the most current and effective ways to achieve successful outcomes?

At its core, life enrichment is a basic human need and desire of our genetic makeup. We were created to be social, move, and use our extraordinary minds. Regardless of age, focusing on fulfilling these basic needs will lead to a better quality of life.

First, we must pause and examine the offerings to ensure we innovate for the resident experience and enrichment approach. Then look at innovative techniques, technology platforms, and partners who enable us to gather data, be more efficient, less manual, and reduce the administrative tasks dependent on human resources.

Top 3 Senior Living Programming Must-Haves

Physical Health – Movement that promotes strength, balance, fall reduction, independence, and prolonged mobility are non-negotiable. Without the necessary intervention of movement, our bodies weaken, and our endurance to achieve basic life activities vanishes. We cannot force people to move, but we must look at the number of opportunities and programs in our communities we offer that instill this basic concept and philosophy. The environment must also be designed in a way that allows people to do so safely and confidently and also meet a variety of individual needs and preferences.

Cognitive Health – Curiosity, novelty, lifelong pursuits, aspirations, goals, sharing of talents, diving into creativity that expands the mind and removes the mundane nature where each day looks similar and repetitive. We create processes for efficiency and scheduling, giving little thought to how that can rob people of novelty and self-directed activities.

Deep Social Connections – The heartbeat and only actual difference between aging in a senior living community or aging in place boils down to who you surround yourself with. We are discovering deep, intimate, meaningful connections with few better than surface-level acquaintances. One person overseeing senior living programming for numerous residents can only learn, store, recall, and make quick decisions about activities and programs without a repository of personalized data and preferences.

At TSOLife, we recognize the importance of these three fundamental aspects of senior living, and our technology continues to evolve with these goals in mind. When residents lack access to physical health, cognitive health, and deep social connections, their overall quality of life decreases. This leads to a less engaged community, higher staff and resident turnover, and shorter stays for new residents.

Innovating Your Life Enrichment Story

Effective Use of Dollars

The question should be different from how communities are appropriating funds, training, and resources not just to grow the footprint and visibility of Life Enrichment, but how do we know the interventions and overall strategy are both effective and successful.

While four walls surround community living, and most of all, interactions, activities, offerings, and life experiences are stationary, we must look at vendors and solutions that promote involvement beyond the walls. Only some people can venture out, which will always remain the same. Instead, we need to innovate how the surrounding and active world around us is brought into the community. Not on a monthly or weekly calendar offering, but rather daily as residents are motivated and interested in exploring beyond the community to remain relevant members of the external community and society.

Outsourcing Programs

Hired and appointed staff members possess natural and learned traits. Yet, we know one or even a few people need help to span the breadth and knowledge required to ensure 100+ individuals meet their specific desires and interests. Hence, we keep adding more activities to the calendar of offerings, yet we are still waiting for an uptick in participation. Group programs are only for some. Because we have staff skill sets that end up directing programming, we must possess enough self-awareness to recognize our deficits, outsourcing programs accordingly to ensure a well-rounded experience.

The Beauty of Data & Insights

Data does not have to be overwhelming or intimidating to the end user. Data is not to call out flaws. Data is meant to show us how to do things more efficiently and effectively. Data is our friend. It provides information that otherwise would take hours and days to compile to make informed decisions. Data is a shortcut. It shows us trends, exceptions, and historical patterns. Data is factual and doesn’t get stuck considering emotion or feelings. It is black and white. Yes or no. Cause and effect. If this did or did not happen, then this or that is probable and most likely to occur.

What does the use of data look like in your everyday?

We can sit and talk about Mr. Jones. How we think he is isolated or lonely. He is not engaging with his peers. He is not eating meals with friends. One staff member may have a different idea. We assume we know what Mr. Jones may be thinking or feeling. Still, when we capture data about Mr. Jones’s quality of life or leisure score, we can remove such notions and view his interests based on his or his family’s words and input. Data provides quick wins and reduces the amount of discussion that can be frustrating and cause disagreement in how to intervene best and support.

TSOLife Brings Innovation to Life Enrichment and Marketing Efforts

Capturing the Story of Your Senior Living Residents

Resident discovery is a dynamic, continuous, and ever-evolving process. People are not static, and we know there is more to an individual’s story than a drop-down list of standard, often stereotypical, lists of interests that are currently offered.

Partnering with a company that captures the resident story using their voice is powerful. More than that, this story via interview is automatically used to build their profile. There is little chance of error for the life enrichment team by relying on memory or handwritten notes to input into a system.

Making Business Decisions Based on Resident Insights

Traditionally, we rely on human capital to interpret and decide the next step. The decision-making process includes sorting through lists and determining what is missing in programming that would incite and motivate someone to participate. Once identified, we add a new calendar offering hoping they will recognize the change and show up. In theory, this is a good practice; however, it could be more efficient.

Data and insights are most successful when shared with and recommended to staff, not contained in a spreadsheet for teams to find after identifying a concern. The Artificial Intelligence ingrained in TSOLife equips teams to be proactive instead of reactionary, immediately notifying them of problems, adjustments in quality of life scores, and a decline in leisure pursuits. This data and suggestive opportunities are front and center in real-time.

Understanding Your Community Makeup

As we know, community makeup is a demographic layer that helps communities determine if a new resident will fit in and thrive as part of the current community makeup. TSOLife provides your team with a goldmine of data through the simple process of getting a resident’s story via voice-recorded interviews. Our Business intelligence compiles the data and insights that community management, Sales, and Marketing teams can confidently rely on to know who resides in the community.

At a simple dashboard view, in seconds, a team member can ascertain on any given day the community makeup, including gender, age, past profession and occupation, interests, leisure pursuits, etc.

Selling a community based on accurate information, whether services or other residents, is an ethical commitment we owe to current customers and future consumers. TSOLife is the platform that enables teams to fulfill this moral obligation.

Likewise, such information is the catalyst that creates a framework and process to ensure innovation. The idea of doing something new. How are engagement and marketing decisions made in your community and organization? Do you trust the data and insights pulled from your current reports? Remember, best-laid plans and execution depend upon knowing who resides in your community.

ASHA Session Recap 2023: The Next Frontier–Integrated Technology That Drives Insights

The session was a thought-provoking discussion on the importance of technology in senior living and its role in driving insights. The panelists also shared valuable information on the critical considerations for operators when evaluating technology solutions.

Right at the start of the session, it was clear that operators in the senior living industry are looking for technology solutions that improve the resident and staff experience. The panel discussed the importance of having a product roadmap that includes integration and the critical role of a strong customer success team in successfully implementing new technology. Vendors were encouraged to act as “true” partners and be willing to listen and evolve to meet the needs of their clients better. It’s hard not to brag, but TSOLife offers a group of talented customer service professionals that work through a detailed onboarding with new partners and ongoing personal support calls throughout the lifetime of the partnership.

Data was also a significant theme of the discussion, with the panel stressing the importance of viewing data as an asset and the need for vendors to work together to overcome the challenges of data silos. As the industry and technology continue to grow, the demand for connecting data will be ever more critical for understanding resident needs and desires, helping the transition to a community as exciting as going to college, my words, not theirs. Making your data communicate could be the difference between knowing how your communities are operating and not. The panel also advised operators and vendors to start with a pilot before fully adopting new technologies.

In conclusion, the session was a great reminder of the importance of integrated technology in the senior living industry and the need for a collaborative approach between operators and vendors to improve the resident experience. We left the conference inspired and grateful for the opportunity to participate in this critical conversation.

The session’s highlight for our team was a quote from Brenda Connelly: “We need to know our residents better when they move in. “This statement encapsulated the core focus of the session–and how the technology should look to better the lives of the residents on day one and provide our staff with insights they can quickly and easily leverage to make their lives better. Knowing we offer the best AI platform, which starts with simplifying the intake and provides crucial insights that lead to an overall higher quality of life, it’s been a challenge not to stand up and let everyone know TSOLife is already fulfilling our partner’s needs.

I’ll also be looking forward to attending next year’s annual event!

5 Ways to Personalize your Resident Experience

Leverage technology solutions that capture data and insights to inform decision-making:

There are times when collecting data and advancing technologies can be intimidating, but the benefits are already being felt in senior living communities. By collecting and analyzing data on residents’ interests, needs, and preferences, you can make better, more strategic decisions about programming, events, and other community activities. Tools like TSOLife’s Actionable Resident Insights can help you leverage data to create personalized touchpoints and improve engagement.

Encourage staff to get to know residents on a personal level:

Staff members who take the time to learn about residents’ backgrounds, interests, and needs are better equipped to provide personalized interactions and experiences. Encourage your staff to make an effort to get to know residents and build relationships with them. Some might even find enough of a connection that they develop a friendship. Staff members whom stronger ties and friendship-level connections tend to be happier, more engaged, and have a more positive working environment!

Offer a variety of resident-desired activities and programming options:

By providing a diverse range of activities and programming options, you can cater to residents’ interests and preferences. This might include fitness classes, art workshops, trivia nights, educational interests, movie screenings, and offerings occurring beyond the community walls. TSOLife’s Minerva AI-powered fully integrated programming calendar can take this further. It identifies residents who have declined or expressed little interest in currently scheduled programs. Of course, committing to being inclusive of individual preferences can be a tedious, manual task. Still, our insights push such suggestions to staff to improve the quality of life for all, not just those most vocal have been engaged or aren’t being offered the activities they are interested in, so you can offer activities that improve all your residents’ quality of life.

Empower residents by including them in the decision-making:

By involving residents in the planning and decision-making process, you can create a greater sense of ownership and community within the living environment. Beyond the monthly resident council meeting, try hosting small groups and regular town hall meetings to solicit input and feedback from both residents and staff.

Personalize the physical environment:

Encourage your residents and their loved ones to use personalized room décor. Use data and insights to identify the organically occurring DNA of your community, which should be a given at this point that you’ll need to provide personalized services. All of which can contribute to residents’ sense of home and belonging. Consider offering options for residents to personalize their living spaces and look for ways to incorporate their interests and preferences into the design and décor of common areas.

By implementing these strategies, you can create a more personalized and engaging experience for residents in your senior living community. Personalization improves satisfaction and well-being but can also help foster a sense of community and connection among residents. It will also make work much more exciting when everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Custom Dashboards and Actionable Insights: Personal Resident Experiences without the Guesswork

Keeping in mind data-entry and technology implementation best practices, let’s talk about how a working platform can provide us value. Like we mentioned before, just because technology can consolidate information in one easy place, doesn’t mean staff will access that data or use it effectively. It needs to be implemented into their workflow so that it doesn’t add time and frustration to their already-hectic jobs.
